moderate neighborhoods where I was living were still over $200,000. It just didn’t make sense to go into that much debt for the rest of my life. In November I made a move back to Iowa where my family lives to help out
temporarily with their business JR Roofing, LLC. I had forgotten over the years what it is like to live in small town USA. The pace is a lot slower, the cost of living a lot lower, and the general happiness of the people is pretty
high. Actually, Iowa has been rated as one of the happiest places in the nation in a few studies. Recently, Quad City News said Iowa was rated ninth in this year's Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.
While looking for a house to rent I was amazed by some of the prices on the houses available on the market. It is cheaper to buy a house than renting most storage units in the big cities. After you stretch out the payments 15 years you can get a lower monthly payment than most cars and a tax deduction besides. I am not a realtor or specialized in the mortgage industry, but I am well versed in small towns and traveling the nation. I just don’t understand why people don’t move if they aren’t happy or barely making ends meet. Maybe they just don’t know.
Another important part that shouldn't be overlooked is to find a realtor that you trust and that knows the area you are wanting to live/rent in. Jack Foresman, the realtor I used was very knowledgeable of the area. He has been doing it so long he passively sells houses just to know the market for the benefit of his farm. I was glad to find him through a family referral.
There is still work in small town Iowa. A few companies have said it has been difficult to find employees in the area. Businesses are constantly interviewing and hiring. Luckily, over time we have built a strong team that we are proud to employ. We are surprised there aren’t more stories in the paper about the amount of jobs in the Midwest. As long as applicants have a valid driver’s license and are legal to work in the United States we are constantly hiring. The type of roofing, though it can be harshly affected by weather, is not as hard as most either.
We deal with flat and low slope roofs like the ones seen on our website. Feel free to comment on this story or go to apply on our careers page.
